Cold Calling and Appointment Setting: A Modern Guide
Cold calling isn't dead—but it needs to be done right. Here's how to set appointments without wasting time on wrong prospects.
Cold calling has a bad reputation because it's often done badly. Most cold calls fail because the caller hasn't done any research and calls at the wrong time.
Successful cold calling requires targeting: Know who you're calling before you dial. Do they fit your customer profile? Do they have the problem you solve?
The goal of a cold call is a single thing: get a brief appointment. You're not trying to sell on the phone. You're not trying to fully qualify them. You're just getting 15 minutes of their time.
Keep the pitch short: 'Hi, I work with [type of business] to help them [specific outcome]. I think there might be a fit, but I don't want to assume. Would you have 15 minutes next Thursday?'
Track your metrics: How many calls does it take to get one appointment? What's your appointment-to-customer conversion rate? Use this data to scale what works.
Consider using WhatsApp or email for follow-up after initial contact. Many prospects prefer a text message or brief email over another phone call.
